State Rep. William Tong of the 147th District (Stamford and New Canaan) has thrown his hat in the ring to seek seek the Democratic nomination for U.S. Senate. Rep. Tong was this week's NewsTalkTonight guest OnTheHORN. Is Tong a strong enough candidate to win against sitting U.S. Congressman Chris Murphy? How about Linda McMahon? His mission (or part of it) may have already been completed. More Connecticut residents know who he is now. Win or lose, "William Tong" is becoming a household name in Connecticut. Here below are highlights of what we discussed and a few of our thoughts. Listen to the interview above and be sure to listen to our post-interview discussion with co-host Jen Just and analyst Terry Cowgill of CTDevilsAdvocate.com, CTEssentialPolitics.com, and CTNewsJunkie.com. Jobs Tong's first priority is jobs — that is, "a war on unemployment." Though some might think his ideas are lofty, there are some interesting specifics like government-subsidized business. When a business hires someone who is receiving unemployment benefits, part of the new hire's unemployment compensation would be contributed to offset the cost of the employee's wages from the employer for a short period of time. The company hiring would only need to make up the difference between salary and subsidy. Housing Refinancing mortgage debt, Tong says, to 4 percent of government-backed loans will put nearly $2,800 per year back in the pockets of Connecticut residents. Moreover, Tong wants to establish bridge loans to people who have lost their jobs. Even for business owners? Small Business Tong suggests business loans, work Visas and grants as solutions. We were expecting more based on his background in small business. The life cycle of a business begins with a lot of nurturing. Helping business owners accumulate debt is anything but nurturing. OnTheHORN would like to see Connecticut's Business Entity Tax repealed, although we know that's not something Tong would be involved with at the federal level. But the government would be smart to lower taxes for younger companies so that the owner can build a reserve of cash for reinvestment without fear of double taxation -- think like people starting a business. Also included in the Small Business information on Tong's website is this statement: "Pass the Job Creators Visa to help talented entrepreneurs create jobs right here on our shores. Google, Yahoo, Sikorsky, Electric Boat — all of these companies were founded by immigrants. We need to make sure the next Google isn't started in Russia or China just because we didn't give entrepreneurs a chance to start it here." Listen to the post-interview analysis below to hear our thoughts on keeping innovation in the U.S. Education Tong says he wants Connecticut to be the No. 1 state for education in 10 years, and we think that fits in as a "BHAG" -- pronounced Bee-Hag -- which is a term from one of OnTheHORN's favorite business books by author Jim Collins, titled "Good To Great, Built To Last." Collins coins the "BHAG" term, which is an acronym for "Big Hairy Audacious Goal." Becoming No. 1 in the nation in education is certainly a BHAG for the Tong campaign. We love it. We're in. Let's do it. Energy Tong seems very practical on the matter of energy. Unafraid to call out "Big Oil" on its gouging greed, Tong questions the way prices are rising during a mild winter. He also explains his feeling on the centuries of natural resources we have here and why nuclear energy can be part of the solution. National Security The biggest discretionary spending item in the federal budget is defense. Can some of that spending be cut to help heal our national debt? Campaign Funding Tong wants to join the fight for a disclosure act. Perhaps this is unrealistic given the political climate, but Tong thinks there is a way to get the huge money out of politics. Post-interview analysis Political analyst Jen Just and CTNewsJunkie columnist Terry Cowgill discuss their thoughts on the Tong interview. Terry also has his own blog at CTDevilsAdvocate.com and publishes CTEssentialPolitics, a daily email blast of all the latest news in politics.
